Morbid Angel(1989)

Morbid Angel is an American death metal band based in Tampa, Florida. UK music magazine Terrorizer ranked one Morbid Angel album in its “Top 40 greatest death metal albums”, with their 1989 debut Altars of Madness appearing at number 1. Decibel Magazine also rated guitarist Trey Azagthoth as the number one “death metal guitarist ever.” The band′s songs are complex in arrangement, owing to the considerable technical skills of both Azagthoth and drummer Pete Sandoval, who also played in the grindcore death metal band Terrorizer. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Morbid Angel is the third best-selling death metal band in the United States with sales of over 445,000;[1] with their third album Covenant being the best-selling death metal album of all time with over 127,000 units sold.[2]

Altars of Madness

Altars of Madness is Florida-based death metal band Morbid Angel's debut album. Bonus tracks were included on the CD version as well as the remastered 2003 release. These are remixed versions of songs from the album. 2006 saw a dualdisc release with the 2003 remaster on the audio side and Live Madness 89 recorded at Nottingham Rock City on November 14, 1989 on the DVD side.

The album contains seminal live favorites,[citation needed] including "Chapel of Ghouls", "Immortal Rites" and "Maze of Torment".

The cover artwork, by Dan Seagrave, represents the different moods of human beings.[citation needed]

Covenant (1993)

Covenant is the third official full-length album by Florida based death metal band Morbid Angel. It was released on June 22, 1993. This album represented Morbid Angel's first foray into mainstream metal, through their contract with Giant Records. The music video for "God of Emptiness" was featured on Beavis and Butt-head and received airplay on MTV. The style of this album is more akin to the slower style of the previous album Blessed Are the Sick. Some early pressings of the album had a Parental Advisory logo on the cover. Future pressings of the album were produced without the advisory.

Covenant was reissued as a Digipak in 2011.[2]

Much of the lyrics for this album, written by David Vincent, could be considered Morbid Angel's most Occult and Satanic based.[citation needed] The album's cover image shows a page from The Book of Ceremonial Magic by Arthur Edward Waite to the right, and a reproduction of "The Pact Of Urbain Grandier" on the left.

According to Nielsen Soundscan, Covenant is the best selling death metal album of all time, with sales of over 127,000 in the United States alone.[3]

Domination

Domination is the fourth full-length studio album by death metal band Morbid Angel, released in 1995. This was Morbid Angel's last album under the label Giant Records before the company filed for bankruptcy. The band then re-signed with their former label, Earache Records.

The original cover is shown here. Today, a different cover exists with the picture shown at a different angle. Initial copies came in a green jewelcase. There was also a limited edition "Slime Pack" planned, which was never released after several packs leaked before shipping and the slime-substance was found to be toxic.

A music video was produced for the song "Where the Slime Live".

David Vincent left the band soon after the release of Domination and was replaced by Steve Tucker. Vincent returned to the band in 2004 but it would not be until the release of Illud Divinum Insanus in 2011 that he would appear on new Morbid Angel recordings.

Formulas Fatal to the Flesh(1998)

Formulas Fatal to the Flesh is the fifth full-length studio album by death metal band Morbid Angel. The title of this album is a biblical reference: it contains the letter "F" - the 6th letter of the alphabet - capitalized three times, which refers to the Number of the Beast, 666.[citation needed] The Satanic themed lyrics of previous albums had been replaced with lyrics about the Ancient Ones, which would become the primary source of Morbid Angel's lyrical content from this point on. This is the first album to introduce singer/bassist Steve Tucker, replacing David Vincent, and has some lyrical content written in Sumerian.

The tunings for this record as on Covenant and Domination remained E♭ on six string guitar songs, and B♭ on seven stringed guitar songs.[citation needed]

Gateways to Annihilation(2000)

Gateways to Annihilation is the sixth studio album by the death metal band Morbid Angel.

This album saw a change in musical style as the speed-laden intensity of the previous album Formulas Fatal to the Flesh was abandoned for a slower, more droning style, reminiscent of Blessed Are the Sick. This is also the first album in which Steve Tucker contributed lyrics and music to the band.

Dan Seagrave painted the album cover.

Heretic(2003)

Heretic is the seventh studio album by the death metal band Morbid Angel. This would be their last under Earache Records, as the band decided not to renew its contract, and the last to feature bassist/vocalist Steve Tucker.

The album was recorded at Diet of Worms Studios by Juan Gonzalez. Heretic is the first Morbid Angel album that was not recorded at Morrisound Recording.

The second track, "Enshrined By Grace", is featured on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre soundtrack. It also had a music video which received airplay in the months following the album release.

The song "Born Again" is actually the outro guitar solo from the song "Secured Limitations" off Gateways to Annihilation.

Abominations of Desolation

Abominations of Desolation was an early demo album by Morbid Angel. While it was originally recorded in May 1986, the band did not release it at the time due to their dissatisfaction with the final product.[2] These recordings would later be released in 1991 at the decision of the band's record label, Earache Records.[1] Trey Azagthoth has stated in interviews this release should be considered a demo and not an album, and that the point of releasing it was primarily to eliminate the need for the low quality bootlegs which were being sold at the time.[citation needed]
